Greying of Hair: Causes, Symptoms, Investigations &Ayurvedic Treatment

Greying of hair, also known as canities, is a natural phenomenon that commonly occurs with aging. However, in recent times, premature greying has become increasingly prevalent among young adults and even teenagers. While it is generally considered a cosmetic concern, it can also be a sign of underlying health imbalances. The ancient Indian medical system known as Ayurveda provides a distinctive and comprehensive viewpoint on this illness.

What is Greying of Hair?

When melanocytes, the cells that produce melanin, the pigment that gives hair its color, slow down or cease generating pigment, hair goes grey. This leads to the hair appearing grey, silver, or white.

Ayurvedic Perspective on Greying Palitya)

In Ayurveda, premature greying is known as “AkalaPalitya” and is caused due to an imbalance of the Pitta dosha, particularly due to excess heat and oxidative stress in the body.

  • Mental stress, anger, and anxiety (increase Pitta).
